Ayurveda: The Divine Science of Life Review

Ayurveda and its principles have been gradually becoming more
accessible to Westerners over the last thirty years. During this time,
a few books have appeared by Westerners on the topic offering an
overview of the field, a few have described materia medica in
Ayurvedic terms, and a few texts from India may be available. To date,
however, there has not been a single comprehensive textbook on the
topic written for the Westerner, by a Western clinical practitioner.
Todd Caldecott's book now fills that gap, and also corrects some
common misconceptions about Ayurveda.
Ayurveda was a dying medical system in India by the turn of the
twentieth century, preserved in a few family lineages in South Asia,
but largely supplanted by British colonial medicine and, in parts of
India, by Unani Tibb. After Indian independence in 1948, there was a
resurgence of interest in this traditional national system. The
resurgence unfortunately was not based on the extant thin lineages of
clinical practice, but on books, and filtered through the lens of a
sometimes-fundamentalist approach of twentieth-century Hinduism. Two
aspects of the resurrected Ayurveda as taught in North America are at
odds with the authentic original tradition. First, original Ayurveda was not a vegetarian system, contrary to common contemporary practice in North America. Second, the pulse diagnosis system in Ayurveda does not
differ essentially from the Chinese system. Caldecott, who was trained in a legitimate lineage in India, practices now in Canada, and supervised a teaching clinic there for some years at the Wild Rose College in Calgary, has corrected these distortions. This is not just a philosophical consideration. Fewer than 3% of the North American population adhere to a strict vegetarian diet, and insisting on this as the ideal diet, besides contradicting core original Ayurvedic literature, essentially rules out benefit to much of the other 97%. Caldecott's text shows how the broad principles of Ayurveda can be applied in the social and dietary realities of 21st century North America.
The book has everything you would expect in a textbook of humoral
medicine: theory, constitutional considerations, dietary and lifestyle
considerations, pharmacology and pharmacy, pathology and disease,
clinical methodology for assessment, therapeutic methods, a materia
medica of the fifty most important Ayurvedic herbs, and a formulary.

The Way of the Crucible Review

In a world with so much re-definition alchemy remains THE constant spiritual system. Why, because it is upon this spiritual science that modern secular science is based but not reliant in either direction. There are three foundations of modern western mysticism, Kablallah, and its separations into Astrology and Alchemy.
Alchemy is the one and only place in which all world spiritual systems may survive the 'shock,' of technology, not only by the fact that alchemy precedes it, but also defines it.
You will find the reasons in this authors works. This current is a theoretical treaties, but also a definite insight for valuable growth.
I cannot express its usefulness in any tradition.

Ayurveda Secrets of Healing Review

This book covers a great many aspects of Ayurveda in quite a lot of depth, including relatively advanced topics such as Pancha Karma and one of my personal favorite therapies, sweating. I really love the book for this reason, and also for the very wise, loving, earth-based and non-dogmatic tone of the author.
I do agree with the comment that the content could be more organized, but the book is so excellent that I'm happy to overlook that point. However, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to Ayurveda to anyone who doesn't have a serious background in alternative health, especially if they're just looking for a few simple techniques to practice at home.

Ayurveda Wisdom (Simple Wisdom (Conari)) Review

We all know that there is a very real connection between the food we eat and the way we feel. At times, we try to eat right and get some exercise. Then we watch the news and find out that that there is a new super food or what we thought was nutritious has suddenly been linked to cancer increases. It's confusing to say the least.
I recently became interested in Ayurveda. These ancient principles suggest that different foods act in particular ways to return our bodies to our normal balance. Balance for each person is unique based upon our physical and mental constitution or dosha. A simple survey asks questions about physical characteristics, emotional reactions, personality traits, digestion issues, etc. These results indicate which of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) is most prevalent and if there are any dosha combination concerns.
Using this information, and the wisdom set out in Ayurveda Wisdom, the reader learns to be aware of changes in emotional behavior and physical reactions that suggest that imbalances are occurring. Particular foods, according to type of taste (sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, or astringent), can then be used to rebalance the system.
With this information, I am learning to listen to my body and recognize when I'm in trouble. Instead of heading straight for those sweets, fast food, or other junk food, I am beginning to see the patterns. I've noticed when I feed my body what it needs, I don't crave the junk and I don't feel as anxious or overwhelmed.

Major Herbs of Ayurveda Review

If you're looking for a textbook on ayurvedic herbs, here it is.
I've been interested in ayurvedic herbs but did not find anything with scientific references. Anecdotal reports are not enough.
A few examples:
Did you know the ficus tree is considered holy and is used for medicine?
Amla, which is a component of the formula "triphala" has been proven to dramatically lower cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids and low density lipoproteins by 82%, 66% 77% and 90% respectively.
REGRESSION OF AORTIC PLAQUES was observed. To put it plainly, when your arteries are clogged, this herb will help unclog them.
I do a lot of research on heart disease had never heard of this.
I know pseudoginseng, which is a Chinese herb, will do the same thing, but I did not know about Amla.

Body Harmonic: The Conscious Anatomy Review

The mysteries of the human anatomy and its link with consciousness have been plaguing medical science for centuries. Here Dr. Adams, a naturalist, herbalist and health educator, reveals the scientific evidence substantiating key doctrines of the ancient traditional medicines to render a modern clarification of the real mind-body-spirit connection. Body Harmonic reveals the hidden concepts of the ancient medicines as never before done. As westerners have attempted to interpret and apply these ancient traditional medicines, much has been lost in translation, relegating them to lore by today's scientific community. These missing pieces, together with the newest scientific research, confirm a wealth of wisdom regarding physiology, the mind, and consciousness. Body Harmonic brings all this together to take us on an unforgettably profound journey of discovery of our selves and our bodies.

Ayurveda - The Power to Heal Review

This slender volume is packed with lofty information. If you ever wondered what consciousness has to do with healing, this book is for you. (But, you should also buy it if you want practical, down-to-earth information on how to live life radiantly!) With elegant simplicity, Dugliss presents Ayurveda for what it truly is--a consciousness-based system of medicine--rather than merely Indian herbal medicine. Consciousness is the fabric of the healing process, the book asserts. It also outlines the fundamental principles of healing that set the stage for the ultimate prevention program, one that can teach you how to avert the diseases that plague modern society, from diabetes and heart disease to fibromyalgia and depression. As a wellness consultant, I plan to a copy of this book to every client. Going beyond illness to wellness requires a shift in how we understand ourselves and the world around us. This book helps us make that shift in perception.

Salud y Vitalidad: Ayurveda (Spanish Edition) Review

This book saved my gallbladder and my money. According to doctors, surgery was the only alternative I had to get rid of my gallbladder stones, something that was causing me severe pain. Luckily, Salud y Vitalidad, came to my rescue, and the day after I followed the simple indications that appear in the chapter "Gallbladder Cleansing", I was able to expel more than 50 stones, avoiding the operation and saving $6000 and my gallbladder. Since then, I follow the diet that the book recommends according to my constitution, in order to avoid the formation of more stones. I also will repeat the cleansing treatment once a year.
Besides, the book is a very nice introduction to Ayurveda for the Spanish-speaking world, since it is not a translation from an English edition, but an original work from experts whose mother language is Spanish, which makes the book much easier to understand for us.

Yoga Therapy: A Guide to the Therapeutic Use of Yoga and Ayurveda for Health and Fitness Review

Anyone can practice a bit of yoga, read a few books and then call themself a yoga therapist.
While the term sounds appealing, caution is advised when using the term "therapy".
The word "therapy" comes from the Greek "therapeia" meaning "a service, an attendance" which, in turn, is related to the Greek verb "therapeuo" meaning "I wait upon." Therapy was (and is) a service done to the sick (from www.medterms.com). Therapy is therefore usually associated with the medical profession rather that yoga teachers.
If you are a professional therapist and are also trained in yoga, this book might help you understand more about the physiological implications of certain yogic practices with some Ayurveda thrown in as well, however if you practice and/or teach yoga and want to become a therapist, this book may lead some to believe in the fantastic curative powers of a bit of bending and twisting with a few breathing exercises thrown in, when there could easily be more to the medical problem than the yoga teacher is trained to deal with.
If you are a patient of someone who bases their qualifications on this book, I would advise you to seek another professional opinion, at least from a qualified therapist in your area of need who is also suitably trained in yoga as well.
As far as therapeutic interventions or medical practice goes, the book is seriously lacking. Remember that the word "yoga" means "to join" or "to bring together" which is designed for the practitioner themselves to do the work, any inner healing and balancing should be done themselves, it is not for someone else to "treat" them using yoga.
This book should certainly be used with caution, especially considering that the author in previous books has unfortunately mistranslated important Sanskrit words into English perhaps with a lack of understanding or awareness as to their physiological and medical implications, e.g. a Sanskrit word for "abdomen" has been mistranslated into "chest". Medically this is entirely insufficient especially when presenting one' self as a "therapist" and could lead to all sorts of unforseen repercussions and medical problems for the uninformed reader.
I would certainly advise caution, tho am well aware that many will ignore this advice and buy the book anyway hoping to become a yoga therapist.

Tibetan Ayurveda: Health Secrets from the Roof of the World Review

Although much of the contemporary material on Tibetan medicine focuses on herbs and acupuncture, they are only a small portion of this ancient healing practice. In Tibetan Ayurveda: Health Secrets From the Roof of the World, author Robert Sachs provides a more in depth, comprehensive examination of a highly integrated medical science that, at best, must seem very peculiar to most Western health practitioners. The primary source used by Sachs was the Gyud-Zhi. This is a shortened title for what can be translated as "The Ambrosia Heart Tantra: The Secret Oral Teachings on the Eight Branches of the Science of Healing."
Sachs points out that, according to Tibetan spiritual history, the origin of these tantras was the Buddha Vaidurya or the Medicine Buddha as he is commonly known. To present these teachings in the customary form of a dialogue, Buddha Vaidurya emanated Himself as two beings: the sage Yile Kye who raised pertinent questions and the sage Rigpe Yeshe who provided the answers. As for the secular history of the Gyud-Zhi, its teachings are believed to have originated in India. Then, in the eighth century, King Sronstan Gampo invited physicians from all over Asia to share their healing practices at what was probably the world's first international medical conference, which established Tibet as the holistic medical capitol of ancient Asia.
Sachs highlights the pertinent aspects of this eight-fold healing tradition, which includes diagnosis, lifestyle changes, nutrition, and both physical and meditative exercises. He points out that lifestyle changes are the least invasive of the therapies and therefore the most important. Upon diagnosis, a Tibetan physician will first look to diet and exercise to affect a change in a patient's condition. The diagnosis is based on a patient's physical characteristics much like Indian Ayurveda. The three physiological types are then subdivided by personality profiles thus formulating six constitutional types. Sachs includes self-evaluation tests then outlines the basic nutritional practices associated with each of the six types. Next, he examines exercise, which centers on Tibetan tai chi and chi kung, rejuvenation exercises, Yantra yoga and Kum Nye, the integration of mind and body, all considered integral to a well-rounded healing program. After instigating the various lifestyle changes, the Tibetan physician may then precipitate healing through Len Nga, a powerful detoxification and rejuvenation therapy similar to Indian Pancha Karma.
The one reservation I have is that Sachs likens the Tibetan practices to macrobiotics and alludes to several macrobiotic practitioners and their works. Although somewhat benign for healthy types, macrobiotics has never been independently confirmed as a realistic therapy for the seriously ill. I would be inclined to say that Tibetan practices have more in common with Indian Ayurveda rather than macrobiotics. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this work for both lay persons and health practitioners alike who would like to expand their horizons and add to their knowledge of alternative therapies.
