Ayurveda: The Divine Science of Life Review

Ayurveda and its principles have been gradually becoming more
accessible to Westerners over the last thirty years. During this time,
a few books have appeared by Westerners on the topic offering an
overview of the field, a few have described materia medica in
Ayurvedic terms, and a few texts from India may be available. To date,
however, there has not been a single comprehensive textbook on the
topic written for the Westerner, by a Western clinical practitioner.
Todd Caldecott's book now fills that gap, and also corrects some
common misconceptions about Ayurveda.
Ayurveda was a dying medical system in India by the turn of the
twentieth century, preserved in a few family lineages in South Asia,
but largely supplanted by British colonial medicine and, in parts of
India, by Unani Tibb. After Indian independence in 1948, there was a
resurgence of interest in this traditional national system. The
resurgence unfortunately was not based on the extant thin lineages of
clinical practice, but on books, and filtered through the lens of a
sometimes-fundamentalist approach of twentieth-century Hinduism. Two
aspects of the resurrected Ayurveda as taught in North America are at
odds with the authentic original tradition. First, original Ayurveda was not a vegetarian system, contrary to common contemporary practice in North America. Second, the pulse diagnosis system in Ayurveda does not
differ essentially from the Chinese system. Caldecott, who was trained in a legitimate lineage in India, practices now in Canada, and supervised a teaching clinic there for some years at the Wild Rose College in Calgary, has corrected these distortions. This is not just a philosophical consideration. Fewer than 3% of the North American population adhere to a strict vegetarian diet, and insisting on this as the ideal diet, besides contradicting core original Ayurvedic literature, essentially rules out benefit to much of the other 97%. Caldecott's text shows how the broad principles of Ayurveda can be applied in the social and dietary realities of 21st century North America.
The book has everything you would expect in a textbook of humoral
medicine: theory, constitutional considerations, dietary and lifestyle
considerations, pharmacology and pharmacy, pathology and disease,
clinical methodology for assessment, therapeutic methods, a materia
medica of the fifty most important Ayurvedic herbs, and a formulary.

The Way of the Crucible Review

In a world with so much re-definition alchemy remains THE constant spiritual system. Why, because it is upon this spiritual science that modern secular science is based but not reliant in either direction. There are three foundations of modern western mysticism, Kablallah, and its separations into Astrology and Alchemy.

Alchemy is the one and only place in which all world spiritual systems may survive the 'shock,' of technology, not only by the fact that alchemy precedes it, but also defines it.

You will find the reasons in this authors works. This current is a theoretical treaties, but also a definite insight for valuable growth.

I cannot express its usefulness in any tradition.

Ayurveda Secrets of Healing Review

This book covers a great many aspects of Ayurveda in quite a lot of depth, including relatively advanced topics such as Pancha Karma and one of my personal favorite therapies, sweating. I really love the book for this reason, and also for the very wise, loving, earth-based and non-dogmatic tone of the author.

I do agree with the comment that the content could be more organized, but the book is so excellent that I'm happy to overlook that point. However, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to Ayurveda to anyone who doesn't have a serious background in alternative health, especially if they're just looking for a few simple techniques to practice at home.

Ayurveda Wisdom (Simple Wisdom (Conari)) Review

We all know that there is a very real connection between the food we eat and the way we feel. At times, we try to eat right and get some exercise. Then we watch the news and find out that that there is a new super food or what we thought was nutritious has suddenly been linked to cancer increases. It's confusing to say the least.

I recently became interested in Ayurveda. These ancient principles suggest that different foods act in particular ways to return our bodies to our normal balance. Balance for each person is unique based upon our physical and mental constitution or dosha. A simple survey asks questions about physical characteristics, emotional reactions, personality traits, digestion issues, etc. These results indicate which of the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) is most prevalent and if there are any dosha combination concerns.

Using this information, and the wisdom set out in Ayurveda Wisdom, the reader learns to be aware of changes in emotional behavior and physical reactions that suggest that imbalances are occurring. Particular foods, according to type of taste (sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter, or astringent), can then be used to rebalance the system.

With this information, I am learning to listen to my body and recognize when I'm in trouble. Instead of heading straight for those sweets, fast food, or other junk food, I am beginning to see the patterns. I've noticed when I feed my body what it needs, I don't crave the junk and I don't feel as anxious or overwhelmed.

Major Herbs of Ayurveda Review

If you're looking for a textbook on ayurvedic herbs, here it is.

I've been interested in ayurvedic herbs but did not find anything with scientific references. Anecdotal reports are not enough.

A few examples:

Did you know the ficus tree is considered holy and is used for medicine?

Amla, which is a component of the formula "triphala" has been proven to dramatically lower cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids and low density lipoproteins by 82%, 66% 77% and 90% respectively.

REGRESSION OF AORTIC PLAQUES was observed. To put it plainly, when your arteries are clogged, this herb will help unclog them.

I do a lot of research on heart disease had never heard of this.

I know pseudoginseng, which is a Chinese herb, will do the same thing, but I did not know about Amla.

Body Harmonic: The Conscious Anatomy Review

The mysteries of the human anatomy and its link with consciousness have been plaguing medical science for centuries. Here Dr. Adams, a naturalist, herbalist and health educator, reveals the scientific evidence substantiating key doctrines of the ancient traditional medicines to render a modern clarification of the real mind-body-spirit connection. Body Harmonic reveals the hidden concepts of the ancient medicines as never before done. As westerners have attempted to interpret and apply these ancient traditional medicines, much has been lost in translation, relegating them to lore by today's scientific community. These missing pieces, together with the newest scientific research, confirm a wealth of wisdom regarding physiology, the mind, and consciousness. Body Harmonic brings all this together to take us on an unforgettably profound journey of discovery of our selves and our bodies.

Ayurveda - The Power to Heal Review

This slender volume is packed with lofty information. If you ever wondered what consciousness has to do with healing, this book is for you. (But, you should also buy it if you want practical, down-to-earth information on how to live life radiantly!) With elegant simplicity, Dugliss presents Ayurveda for what it truly is--a consciousness-based system of medicine--rather than merely Indian herbal medicine. Consciousness is the fabric of the healing process, the book asserts. It also outlines the fundamental principles of healing that set the stage for the ultimate prevention program, one that can teach you how to avert the diseases that plague modern society, from diabetes and heart disease to fibromyalgia and depression. As a wellness consultant, I plan to a copy of this book to every client. Going beyond illness to wellness requires a shift in how we understand ourselves and the world around us. This book helps us make that shift in perception.

Salud y Vitalidad: Ayurveda (Spanish Edition) Review

This book saved my gallbladder and my money. According to doctors, surgery was the only alternative I had to get rid of my gallbladder stones, something that was causing me severe pain. Luckily, Salud y Vitalidad, came to my rescue, and the day after I followed the simple indications that appear in the chapter "Gallbladder Cleansing", I was able to expel more than 50 stones, avoiding the operation and saving $6000 and my gallbladder. Since then, I follow the diet that the book recommends according to my constitution, in order to avoid the formation of more stones. I also will repeat the cleansing treatment once a year.
Besides, the book is a very nice introduction to Ayurveda for the Spanish-speaking world, since it is not a translation from an English edition, but an original work from experts whose mother language is Spanish, which makes the book much easier to understand for us.

Yoga Therapy: A Guide to the Therapeutic Use of Yoga and Ayurveda for Health and Fitness Review

Anyone can practice a bit of yoga, read a few books and then call themself a yoga therapist.

While the term sounds appealing, caution is advised when using the term "therapy".

The word "therapy" comes from the Greek "therapeia" meaning "a service, an attendance" which, in turn, is related to the Greek verb "therapeuo" meaning "I wait upon." Therapy was (and is) a service done to the sick (from www.medterms.com). Therapy is therefore usually associated with the medical profession rather that yoga teachers.

If you are a professional therapist and are also trained in yoga, this book might help you understand more about the physiological implications of certain yogic practices with some Ayurveda thrown in as well, however if you practice and/or teach yoga and want to become a therapist, this book may lead some to believe in the fantastic curative powers of a bit of bending and twisting with a few breathing exercises thrown in, when there could easily be more to the medical problem than the yoga teacher is trained to deal with.

If you are a patient of someone who bases their qualifications on this book, I would advise you to seek another professional opinion, at least from a qualified therapist in your area of need who is also suitably trained in yoga as well.

As far as therapeutic interventions or medical practice goes, the book is seriously lacking. Remember that the word "yoga" means "to join" or "to bring together" which is designed for the practitioner themselves to do the work, any inner healing and balancing should be done themselves, it is not for someone else to "treat" them using yoga.

This book should certainly be used with caution, especially considering that the author in previous books has unfortunately mistranslated important Sanskrit words into English perhaps with a lack of understanding or awareness as to their physiological and medical implications, e.g. a Sanskrit word for "abdomen" has been mistranslated into "chest". Medically this is entirely insufficient especially when presenting one' self as a "therapist" and could lead to all sorts of unforseen repercussions and medical problems for the uninformed reader.

I would certainly advise caution, tho am well aware that many will ignore this advice and buy the book anyway hoping to become a yoga therapist.

Tibetan Ayurveda: Health Secrets from the Roof of the World Review

Although much of the contemporary material on Tibetan medicine focuses on herbs and acupuncture, they are only a small portion of this ancient healing practice. In Tibetan Ayurveda: Health Secrets From the Roof of the World, author Robert Sachs provides a more in depth, comprehensive examination of a highly integrated medical science that, at best, must seem very peculiar to most Western health practitioners. The primary source used by Sachs was the Gyud-Zhi. This is a shortened title for what can be translated as "The Ambrosia Heart Tantra: The Secret Oral Teachings on the Eight Branches of the Science of Healing."

Sachs points out that, according to Tibetan spiritual history, the origin of these tantras was the Buddha Vaidurya or the Medicine Buddha as he is commonly known. To present these teachings in the customary form of a dialogue, Buddha Vaidurya emanated Himself as two beings: the sage Yile Kye who raised pertinent questions and the sage Rigpe Yeshe who provided the answers. As for the secular history of the Gyud-Zhi, its teachings are believed to have originated in India. Then, in the eighth century, King Sronstan Gampo invited physicians from all over Asia to share their healing practices at what was probably the world's first international medical conference, which established Tibet as the holistic medical capitol of ancient Asia.

Sachs highlights the pertinent aspects of this eight-fold healing tradition, which includes diagnosis, lifestyle changes, nutrition, and both physical and meditative exercises. He points out that lifestyle changes are the least invasive of the therapies and therefore the most important. Upon diagnosis, a Tibetan physician will first look to diet and exercise to affect a change in a patient's condition. The diagnosis is based on a patient's physical characteristics much like Indian Ayurveda. The three physiological types are then subdivided by personality profiles thus formulating six constitutional types. Sachs includes self-evaluation tests then outlines the basic nutritional practices associated with each of the six types. Next, he examines exercise, which centers on Tibetan tai chi and chi kung, rejuvenation exercises, Yantra yoga and Kum Nye, the integration of mind and body, all considered integral to a well-rounded healing program. After instigating the various lifestyle changes, the Tibetan physician may then precipitate healing through Len Nga, a powerful detoxification and rejuvenation therapy similar to Indian Pancha Karma.

The one reservation I have is that Sachs likens the Tibetan practices to macrobiotics and alludes to several macrobiotic practitioners and their works. Although somewhat benign for healthy types, macrobiotics has never been independently confirmed as a realistic therapy for the seriously ill. I would be inclined to say that Tibetan practices have more in common with Indian Ayurveda rather than macrobiotics. Nevertheless, I highly recommend this work for both lay persons and health practitioners alike who would like to expand their horizons and add to their knowledge of alternative therapies.

Practical Ayurveda: Secrets for Physical, Sexual & Spiritual Health Review

A bit hard to rate, this is the first and only book I've ever read on the subject.
I write this anyway, just to say that I think the book, or maybe rather "the subject of the book" is marvelous, and I find that most of these "health-ideas" or whatever one should call them, work extremely well and are easilly applied to my own daily life. In the past few weeks I have experienced a genuine "getting-better-both-mantally-and-physically"-feeling, that includes waking ealier, sleeping less (but deeper and feeling more relaxed and well-rested when I wake up), feeling less tired in my body, and genreally feeling much clearer in my mind and my thinking

I have been "studying" various indian/eastern thoughts for the past 3-4 years, just for fun and because I find them interesting (and mostly true)and this sort of feels like the logical extension to most of it.

Im not a fanatic, Im not a member of any weird cult or bizare comunity ... I did stop smoking and drinking to much though, now you are warned :-) ... but I think that this ayur-veda can really teach one how to better listen to the body, and get better at responding to some quite clear signals that tell us - all day long - whether we are living in a healthy way or not ...¨

This book is good at linking the ayur-veda-thoughts to the general "yoga-philosophies" ... if you don't like this, maybe the book is not for you ... my sister read it and called it "brainwashing propaganda" ... I think it works well, and have some really good explanations/insights on many things ... read it and find out ... I highly recommend it

Absolute Beauty: Radiant Skin and Inner Harmony Through the Ancient Secrets of Ayurveda Review

I've only ever written one review before, but felt compelled to do so after reading this book. I'm not kidding when I say it's transformed my skin. I've struggled with adult acne for years, and my skin is the clearest ever - and best of all, I'm not spending $$$ on skin care. I love the fact that everything I'm using on my face I could eat! I'll be honest too, I'm not following everything recommended to the T. I've already bought this book for a couple of friends, and I've got to say, whether you have problem skin or just want a more natural approach, this book is definitely worth checking out. It's truly beautiful and inspiring, and I know I'll keep going back to it. PS there is one review by someone saying she has sensitive skin, she already knew that and so immediately started the program. I would urge her, and anyone planning to try the advice in this book, to actually read the book and go through the diagnosis process, rather than skipping to the suggested programs. I discovered my skin type is pita dominant, and was surprised as normally my body type is considered vattic. Take your time with the book, don't expect quick fixes, but read it and enjoy the journey it can take you on! It's not presciptive (ie, you have oily skin, do this... and if you read it that way, you are missing the point), it's an opportunity to tune into yourself in a far deeper way, and access the wisdom that is in your skin and in your body. I thank the author for sharing the wisdom she has gained.

Ayurveda Revolutionized: Integrating Review

As an Ayurveda practitioner for the last nine years I highly recommend this book which offers a new slant on this ancient system of healing. This book changed my thinking about Ayurveda, and truly "revolutionized" the way I work with clients. In it, the author claims to have rediscovered a more ancient system of Ayurveda that goes back to a time when Ayurveda and a True Science Of The Stars were one system. This system focuses less on Constitution, and instead places emphasis on the way the body goes out of balance, which he calls the Seven Disease Tendencies. This is a controversial book because it challenges our assumptions about Ayurveda, but if approached with an open mind it could yield great riches for you.

Practice of Ayurveda Review

Ayurveda is the Veda or knowledge of Ayus or Life.It has been clled tas the fifth Veda. There are three main branches of Ayurveda and they deal with causes, symptoms and treatment of diseases.Ayurveda serves as the best guide for the healthy as well as for the sick.

Charaka,Sushruta,Vaghata,Madhava and Sarangadhara were the great Rishis or Fathers of Ayurvedic medicine. They were Yogis and and had great power of observation, generalization and analysis.Their students made wonderful researches.India's fertility for medical herbs and plants contributed a great deal to the prosecution of their study of medicine.

The principles of Ayurvedic treatment,in the main, are the same as that of allopathic treatment. They consist of removing the injurious agent, soothing the injured body and mind, eradicating the cause. The difference lies in the methods of detail adopted by different systems.Besides,in Ayurveda great importance is given to the study of the various stages of variation of the three Doshas or humous of the body-Vatha,Pitha and Kapha.

A good book for the beginner.

Sukham Ayu (Cooking at Home with Ayurvedic Insights) Review

BOOK FLAP: Through centuries, great masters of science and philosophy have interpreted and defined life in myriad ways. According to Ayurveda, 'ayu' or life is an orchestra of body, senses, mind and soul. For sweet music to flow, the body and the senses have to be nurtured in a way that they take care of the mind and soul. Balance, moderation and compatibility are the grand conductors of this heavenly orchestra that steer life away from sickness and suffering, thus leading to a well-lived life of happiness and contentment, or Sukham Ayu. You are what you eat, claims the popular adage. Add to this the knowledge that what you need to eat is not elaborate menus with unavailable and exotic ingredients, but simple home cooked food using regional and seasonal availables that suit your constitution. This is the quintessence of an Ayurvedic diet in a nutshell. This collection of recipes consists of daily, simple, vegetarian dishes that all Indian homes are familiar with. A closer look will reveal the fine thread of Ayurvedic insights binding them together, for what makes food healthy and Ayurvedic is proper combinations, compatibility and methods of cooking. Thus, these recipes have been included with a clear focus on freshly cooked food, on the correct use of spices to enhance taste and good health, on the right combinations that make them tridoshik, or agreeable to all doshas . Slight variations and unobtrusive additions and deletions to daily home cooking, along with Ayurvedic insights, make these recipes worth trying.

Ayurveda and Marma Therapy: Energy Points in Yogic Healing Review

I think that the majority of people have some understanding of the concepts behind acupuncture and acupressure. Tiny needles or pressure is put into or onto certain points of the body. These points lay along meridian lines along which chi or life energy flows. By doing so, blockages or stagnation is eliminated and the natural flow is resumed. In turn, the body regains its health.

In some ways, Marma Therapy is similar to these methods. Marma Therapy also looks to correct the natural energy flow in the body to correct health issues. Specific points on the body are used to do so. Some forms of Marma Therapy even use acupressure techniques.

However, with Marma Therapy, these points are generally massaged in a particular way. The direction of the massage, the oils employed, the accompanying meditations, and the actual points worked upon are tailored to the individual based upon his or her Ayurvedic type and the particular excesses or deficiencies that need to be balanced. Overall, it is a far more complex process but one that is perfectly suited to the individual's needs.

The Healing Power of Gemstones: In Tantra, Ayurveda, and Astrology Review

This is a guide to optimising physical and psychological well-being through the use of gemstones, with reference to the disciplines of Tantra an Ayurveda. The author discusses how Indian astrologers, Ayurvedic healers and Tantric alchemists use gems in their practices and provides clear instructions for the creation of gemstone talismans and the performanc of rituals involving gems to bring about desired effects. The book serves as both a practical guide to the subtle nature of gemstones and as an overview of their use through the ages. The introduction looks at gemstones and the human race and gems and astrology, while Part 2 deals with particular stones and their ruling planets: ruby, pearl, coral, emerald, yellow sapphire, diamond, blue sapphire, hessonite and cat's eye. There is also a chapter on semi-precious stones and gems of medicinal value plus one devoted to healing with gemstones. It was interesting to learn that gems work with both Physicochemical and Pranic energy, whether the are worn as jewelry or taken orally in the form of pastes or oxides. Beautiful illustrations, Sanskrit script and figures enliven the text and there are many tables and astrological charts.

Healing Depression the Mind-Body Way: Creating Happiness with Meditation, Yoga, and Ayurveda Review

As a therapist, I am always looking for books that will help my patients find new insights about themselves and better ways to deal with toxic stress in their lives. Dr. Nancy Liebler and Sandra Moss's book is an ideal resource. It is a very readable application of the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda medicine to the problem of depression. I found their delineation of the three types of depression and the subsequent discussion of particular healing approaches to each one, illuminating. Beyond that, the authors offer many extremely useful suggestions about ways to create inner peace and well being by integrating Yoga, proper breathing techniques, meditation and diet. This book is not only about healing depression, it is about living a better life!

The Roots of Ayurveda (Penguin Classics) Review

Ayurveda, the ancient art of healing, has been practiced in India for more than two thousand years and survives today as a living medical tradition whose principles are at the heart of many "alternative" therapies now used in the West. This "science of longevity" has parallels with Buddhist thought, and advocates a life of moderation through which the three humors of the body will be brought into balance. The writings selected for this volume are taken from Sanskrit medical texts written by the first Ayurvedic physicians, who lived between the fifth century b.c. and the fourteenth century a.d. Here readers will find wide-ranging and fascinating advice on the benefits of garlic therapy, prayers for protection against malevolent disease deities, surgical techniques, exercise regimens, the treatment of poisons, the interpretation of dreams, and more.

Ayurveda for Women: A Guide to Vitality and Health Review

Ayurveda is one of the oldest known systems of healing. It emphasizes the quality of life and all that can affect it. Dr. Robert Svoboda focuses on the health and happiness of women in Ayurveda for Women: A Guide to Vitality and Health, his latest book.

Dr. Svoboda is the first Westerner to graduate from a college of Ayurveda and be licensed to practice in India. He currently writes, teaches, and lectures internationally.

According to Ayurvedic principles, "every substance that we encounter and every action that we perform or that is performed on us influences our inner balance for good or ill." Dr. Svoboda adds that "Ayurveda aims to train individuals to evade disease, rather than insisting that they wait for illnesses to develop before they can be treated."

He describes three stages in women's lives-youth, adulthood, and old age-and provides complete information on the role of Ayurvedic practices in each stage. Essential to good health at any stage of life is "flow," that is, the ability of "substances and energies [to] continually and adroitly find their ways into and out of living organisms." In humans, this includes processes like digestion and menstruation. Blockages in any of the fourteen primary flows lead to problems.

Ayurveda is based on three "forces" which are called doshas. Dr. Svoboda describes the characteristics of each dosha, and provides a simple quiz that allows women to determine which dosha predominates in their life. He explains the strengths and weaknesses of each dosha, and how to incorporate those into daily life.

A balanced life includes exercise, sleep, diet, meditation, and good relationships. Ayurveda principles include becoming aware of the role of each of these, and practicing body-mind-spirit healing. Dr. Svoboda says that "the better you can awaken your awareness, the better you will flow through life, and the more health will accrue to you." Heaven's Banquet: Vegetarian Cooking for Lifelong Health the Ayurveda Way Review

At first perusal, I wasn't very impressed with this book. It seemed sort of lengthy and all the recipes seemed a little too simple, like why would you even need a recipe to make that?

However, after trying some of the recipes I have become a huge fan of this book. Whether I'm looking for something Ayurvedic or just something to make quickly for dinner, I can find the absolute perfect thing in this book.

The recipes may seem simple, but they are plentiful and amazing. I have tried many vegetarian cookbooks, but this one is way beyond what I could have hoped for in a singe resource. The author obviously did a huge amount of researching and testing to make the incredible variety that are available in the book.

Textbook of Ayurveda, Volume One: Fundamental Principles Review

Destined to become the definitive English-language textbook of ayurveda

Dr. Vasant Lad is a world-renowned ayurvedic physician, born and educated in India, with more than forty years of clinical experience. He is one of the world's leading teachers and scholars of ayurveda, and served as professor of clinical medicine at the University of Pune College of Ayurvedic Medicine & Surgery as well as director of its affiliated hospital. Currently, he is president of and a senior faculty member at the Ayurvedic Institute, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Vasant Lad is the author of several professional texts and popular works on ayurveda and has written countless articles on the subject.

There have been many textbooks published for intending practitioners of ayurveda, but until now nearly all of these have been in Sanskrit or more frequently Hindi or one of India's regional languages. Lacking facility in one or more of these, the English speaking student was left with one of two relatively time-consuming and unsatisfactory alternatives: consulting English-language translations of ayurveda's classics (i.e., the Sushruta and Charaka compendiums and the Astanga Hridaya, inter alia, a prospect unwieldy to say the least given the host of ancient therapies no longer in existence in today's world and the often untranslatable proper names of conditions and medicines) or compiling and correlating information from popular works on the subject and online sources.

Dr. Vasant Lad's "Textbook of Ayurveda: Fundamental Principles" has resolved this daunting task for the professional student of ayurveda and provided in one well-organized, well-written and very clear English-language volume all salient aspects of the philosophical and scientific foundation that ayurveda stands upon: from the metaphysical underpinnings to the foundations of ayurvedic anatomy and physiology.

The book is arranged into ten sections covering, respectively the shad darshan (the metaphysical assumptions underlying ayurveda); the elements, gunas (qualities of matter) and the tridoshic theory; dosha subtypes and their locations and functions; agni (degistive processes) the sapta dhatus (seven tissue types); srotamsi (channels or meridians), ojas, tejas, and prana (subtle forms of the doshas), digestion and nutrition and swasthavritti (ayurvedic concepts of healthy lifestyles and regimens). The flow of instructional material in the book is superlatively well-organized, with the information provided in one section providing a knowledge base for the effective study of material provided in subsequent sections.

With the coming of ayurveda to the West, there has emerged a great need for a foundation-level textbook that not only caters to Western learning styles but that also forges a link between ayurveda's conceptions of anatomy and physiology and those of Western biomedicine. It contains the necessary foundation for the understanding of a paradigm of health and disease far removed from the Western one, going far beyond the level of detail and sophistication than that encountered in works published for the interested lay public.

The appearance of this valuable work by Dr. Lad is synchronous with the creation of more and higher quality, academically rigorous programs of instruction and training in ayurveda outside of the country of its birth. Dr. Lad has written what I believe will become the definitive textbook of ayurveda for English-speaking and reading students in the West, and is due an enormous debt of thanks by the ayurvedic profession and by the public in general. I heartily and unhesitatingly recommend this work as a necessity for all aspiring practitioners of ayurveda. It will also be of use to health professionals schooled in Western biomedical concepts who wish to achieve a degree of familiarity with ayurvedic concepts.

The Hidden Secret of Ayurveda Review

Seriously, It is better to go for a more comprehensive book. This book is very very basic. It can still help those who have never been exposed to ayurveda. I suggest to buy a better book. May be other book by the same author titled 'Prakriti'.

The Ayurveda Encyclopedia: Natural Secrets to Healing, Prevention, & Longevity Review

I bought this book about 2 years ago on a whim, but it has proved to be the most thorough book I have found on Ayurveda to date. Several other books I found on Ayurveda were not only smaller than this one, but very vague in what they were talking about. Ayurveda is not cut and dried, so you will find different beliefs in Ayurveda depending on the source, but if you study it enough you will find some things are constant. It's helpful also to cultivate an awareness of your body and lifestyle to better know what suits you.... anyways,

This book has something for everyone: herbalism, diet, yoga stretches, gem, color and music therapy, mantras, and meditation, body cleansing and massage, etc. etc.
I like that even though this book was recorded by a Westerner (but dictated by an Indian) it' hasn't been watered down with your standard New Agey vague "spiritual" crap. Many of the traditional Indian practices are mentioned, even though they are not all considered to be healthy in the Western world (i.e., mineral bhasmas, or burning certain minerals and using them as medicine; where in the US some are illegal because they contain lead or mercury, in India their medicinal properties are recognized, similar to the use of some poisons in Homeopathy) If there is anything I can't stand, it is sugar-coated, vague, generalized references that have been dumb-downed for us Westerners! I prefer ethnographies or at least books that are as close to the real thing as can get.
This book is at times general, but for the things that really count (the things you can put down the book and go and actually do yourself) this book does not skimp on the details.
There are a lot of spelling errors in this book, so sometimes you have to guess at what some words are, but the information is still valid.
I have found this book to be very helpful and enlightening. When reading this book I recognized things that I already knew to be true subconsciously, but did not realize other people knew about as well. For example: when reading about nutrition and the effects different kinds of food have on the body. I have heard it said that the best books are the ones which remind you of what you already know, because they point to universal truths. I would say 5000 years is a good amount of time to distill the truth about a thing! This book definitely changed my life for the better

Textbook of Ayurveda, Volume Two: A Complete Guide to Clinical Assessment Review

I have this textbook as well as volume 1 and the minute volume 3 is released, later in the year, I will have that one too. This book is really great, straight and true Ayurveda with no "extra stuff" and all the knowledge Dr. Lad generally packs into his books. They are also easy to read which makes learning Ayurveda easier.

Marma Points of Ayurveda: The Energy Pathways for Healing Body, Mind, and Consciousness with a Comparison to Traditional Chinese Medicine Review

I've read many (good) books on Marma Chikitsa, from western and Indian authors. But I always felt that something was missing. This book from Dr. Lad is simply the best and most complete book. It brings a comprehensive description of 117 points (more than all other books), and a very interesting correlation with acupoint. It is certainly an essential book for those who want deeper studies on Ayurveda.

Book Of Ayurveda Review

I love this book. I even lent it out and forgot who it got passed around to and re-bought it. The way this book is laid out makes it so easy to reference. It is not a book for the student who has lots of knowledge/experience. For the lay-person it is a must. Also it makes a great gift. This is the book which expanded my interest in Ayurveda (and yoga). I refer to it often when I fall off track. It provides a dosha assessment test and an extensive list of foods along with some important recipes. Also it is a great book to flip through when you need to be reminded of some important dos and don'ts of eating, exercise, sleeping habits, etc. This was the best [$$] I ever invested. Or...RE-invested, that is.

Essential Ayurveda: What It Is and What It Can Do for You Review

This book is a perfect introduction to Ayurveda although there is enough detail to engage even someone with a general understanding of the subject. It is well-organized and covers the potentially confusing multi-layered concepts of Ayurveda with an accessible easy-to-understand approach. This book is a quick easy read but inspirational and life affirming. It is great for someone who would like to learn about Ayurveda and gives readers the tools necessary to begin to easily incorporate it into their lives.

Ayurveda and the Mind Review

This is an EXCELLENT book. Abstract and very deep truths are lucidly conveyed without sacrificing intricacy or impact. If you are interested in psychology, spirituality, or Ayurveda, this is a wonderful, unique book. Dr. Frawley is extremely thorough and brings much integrity to his work. This book may be a bit much for some, but those truly interested in furthering their awareness will find many treasures in these pages. If you are looking for an intro to Ayurveda, start with something else, like Dr. Frawley's "Yoga and Ayurveda."
